Hi all,
I'm new to Triking ownership although I'm not new the Trikings.
I've been given my Dads Type 1, 1986 vintage.
She is in a fairly sorry state, the salt air down in Cornwall has corroded all of the chrome plating, alloy is furry etc.
However I have two issues to sort out that I know of at the moment.
First of all, the fuel pipes have perished, the rubber pipe runs from the the carbs through a bulkhead into the centre tunnel up to the electric pump situated near the back of the tunnel. Is there a way to get into the tunnel, to pull the new pipe through, would you replace the rubber pipe with a metal one?
The second problem is one that my Dad had had before the trike was laid up.It is very difficult to engage first gear, i tried to adjust it back then and had little success, he had previously replaced the rear engine oil seal, so it's been apart, but he doesn't remember if the issue was there before then.
Any pointers on any of the above will be very much appreciated.
Many thanks Conal
New Triking owner, advise needed please.
Re: New Triking owner, advise needed please.
Glad to see you are keeping the T1 in the family, good work!
You may be able to gain much better access from underneath.
Jack it up and put on axle stands, safety first.
Do ensure you get the correct grade of ethanol resistant fuel line.
On the gear selection, for the Guzzi gearbox, is the fulchrum on the linkage fouling on the chaasis or any other area stopping that final mm of movement.
Failing external mechanical adjustment, it may need gearbox out and stripping to re-shim the selector barrel. There is a link somewhere on here for procedure instructions.
Good luck.

Congratulations on joining the club!
In order to gain access to the tunnel for the fuel hose (and the gearbox linkage) your best bet is to safely raise the whole Triking up as much as possible, otherwise you'll be on your knees, bending right over it. There is limited access to the tunnel from underneath anyway, as this picture of a Type 1 chassis on it's side that I recently restored shows.
Instead, you need to remove all the trim from the passenger side of the tunnel including any underfelt and you should find several holes in the tunnel big enough to get your hands in. It should then be fairly easy to replace the fuel hose with the appropriate new one. I would use hose with padded P clips myself.
The gear selection problems could be several things, but with the Triking safely raised up, it would be possible to look from underneath whilst the gear lever is operated and see what's happening. Because it's a sequential gearbox the gear lever needs as much forward movement as backward movement, in order to rotate the selector drum through the selector arm at the back of the gearbox. The Type 1 linkage sits in a very exposed position as well, so it's possible it may have partially seized or be heavily worn resulting in a lot of free play.
There is some adjustment at the front of the linkage from memory but the key thing is to check the selector arm on the gearbox is able to move equally in both both directions when the linkage is operated.

Re: New Triking owner, advise needed please.
Thank you both for your replies, that is very helpful, I've ordered SAE30 R9 fuel pipe, which isn't cheap, but i don't want any leaks in the future.
I'm hoping to get the Trike up and running by spring and do some cosmetics along the way.
Cheers Conal

Good luck and we look forward to meeting you at a do sometime.
