Having finally reassembled the Triking today was the big test.
When I started the recent process I suffered from a major brake failure and the gearbox stuck in gear. I ended up with a simple fix on the front brakes, new bleed screws. The back brake required a new master cylinder, rear disc caliper and new brake hose. It all now works but the balance between front and back hass yet to be finished.
The gearbox, after endless fiddling seemed to be in neutral although there was a lot of play in the shifter. So to today's test. It fired up ok but still needs carb adjustment so I pushed the clutch peddle and selected 1st. It seemed to be more like 2nd but I headed down the hill and turned around at the bottom. Brakes ok but still seemed to be in 2nd or 3rd????? I slipped the clutch and got back into the driveway. Very strong smell of burning, I suspect the clutch.
After another hour of fiddling I am no closer to solving the problem.
I headed back to the shifter mechanism which is really buried in my type 1. I poked around and found lots of oil and grease. The grease is pink and does not smell too bad and I assume it is from the gearbox.
My thinking at present is that: a) there is a gearbox issue, b) there is an oil seal issue, c) there is a shifter or shift mechanism issue. All of these question suggest removing the engine/gearbox to identify actual problem. I have had zero experience in doing this on a Triking so I am looking for a review of my conclusions and, if possible, a worksheet on how to best remove and replace the engine etc.
This does take my mind of the forest fires all over eastern Canada and Newfoundland as well as endless heatwaves and no rain. Thanks in advance

Re: gearbox issues
Pink grease?
Has someone put ATF in the gearbox? Supposed to be EP75 - 80 gear oil.
Just clean everything spotless, remove all slop and lost motion at joints, adjust/alter the entire system so each "turn" is 90 degrees.
If you are running the bike standard rear drive and wheel it will feel like you are pulling off in second due to the extra weight ( think sidecar with passenger added ).

Re: gearbox issues
Hi everyone, I went back at the gearbox linkage and used a small tie wrap as a shim to reduce slop. After another lengthy fiddle about it seemed to be in neutral and, wonders will never cease, the neutral light came on. I started it up in the garage, pushed into 1st and drove out, whoohoo.A couple of brief laps proved the it went from neutral to first, back to neutral and up and down through the box. It also stopped so, for the first time in nearly 2 years, The Triking and I went out for a very brief and careful run. The other jobs remain but, at least they will be for a reason.
I would still really appreciate a worksheet or plan for removing the engine for this coming winter. Maybe there is an assembly/disassembly book somewhere in someone's archives. There is a local shop that deals with classic motorcycles and he is going to have a look at the carbs as the only moto guzzi mechanic has long since retired.
Equally good news, our local forest fires, about 3 miles from one of my daughters is finally under control.
