Mystery fuse

The Triking started to show an ignition light and the battery was running low which it hasn't before. I have an alternator tester and this was not showing any charge coming through so I thought I had found the issue BUT.....
Whilst revving the engine to do the test I noticed sparks coming from an inline 30amp fuse connecting the positive battery terminal to the regulator.
The fuse holder is all melted and will need replacing but I can't see that a fuse between is specified on the wiring diagram.
Am I ok just to replace the fuse and holder or does this point to a bigger problem with the regulator or the Alternator?
Thanks in anticipation
Andy
