The following request has been made of me by a Trikingista friend Andrew. Please can the Pannier people let Andrew have some detail please? Richard, Mark and Ian and A.N.Other?

I noticed that you might know a thing or two about panniers, do they not cook? Do they require a permanently visible bracket on a T4. Finally do I need to make them or modify some existing ones? Sorry for all the questions but it sounds like you might just know the answers.

Perhaps some pictures and details?

I did explain to Andrew: Mark made his own from aluminium and fibreglass, Richard modified a motorcycle set as possibly did Ian. I bought a pair at Founder’s day last year but have subsequently acquired a T4 which has room in front of Pat’s feet for a large bag which we used with a small suitcase on the rack and a centre mirror extension.

I was fortunate that my donor bike came with panniers, which I subsequently used as additional luggage space. Very little modification to the panniers or the car were required. I added an additinal exhaust pipe mount towards the front, then made a stainless mount for each pannier which is attattached to the exhaust pipes with about 1cm clearance from the pipes. An additional bolt goes through the side of the panniers and into the fiberglass body of the Triking to keep the pannier stable. Works quite well, and I think that they blend in with the Triking and supply a surprising amount of luggage space. They can both be attached/removed in 10 minutes or so.

My requirements were to carry my good wife’s requirements for a week away when required but be fully detachable. I fabricated a permanent bracket which fits under the floor. Two detachable foot plates then fit in to these brackets. The suitcase type pannier then clip to the foot plates. Suitcases can then be taken into hotel, b&b etc. Suitcase is triangular made from aluminium and covered with leather. The cutouts for exhaust are trimmed with engine bay heat shield and do not get hot due to forced airflow when travelling. Works for us.
