Hi folks,

Just a quick query, has anyone ever used a Convert as a donor motor and drive train, would it be possible?

Also a nice JZR see link.

Also look at Guzzi mods section 5 adding reverse to convert gearbox.

Thanks Tibetans, interesting site, needed to use google translate to wade through.
The JZR-Threewheeler tab gives details of a Convert powered JZR, looks like it was at a Dreirad Treffen.
The Tipps & Tricks does give a very interesting explanation of adding reverse gear to the Convert box, especially if one has access to specialist machining facilities.

Back in "the day" we actually built a couple of Trikings with the Convert engine, One for a customer with limited leg mobility, They ran very well, I probably wouldn,t consider doing so now just because the part availability is poor for the Convert.

I have just been down the Convert donor path.

You'll need a new timing cover, and will lose your tacho. The Convert has a transmission oil pump driven off an extension to the camshaft, so does not have the worm to drive a tacho. The 'vert timing cover has a bulge and a pair of inlet/outlet spigots at the top that look like little horns....

You will also need a flywheel, because a 'vert does not have one. Get the heaviest you can, which is a matter of looking at them at the wreckers. Basically any big block flywheel will fit, from the original V7 onwards, but people have a propensity for lightening them, and many aren't much use to us.

I spent a lot of time with a dial indicator setting timing marks on mine before I realised that you can't see 'em once the engine is in place.

Having done both timing cover and flywheel I discovered that one piston and the opposite cylinder were completely and utterly unserviceable, and so the whole plan was scrapped.

On re-reading the original post, I see that the transmission was also part of the question.

That's tricky, too.

Converts use a different drive shaft and uni assembly to all other big block Guzzis, with a finer spline, and they use a longer swinging arm, with a higher ratio final drive. So you could build a 'vert based Triking, but would need to use the whole drive train, which would necessitate a custom driveshaft between the back of the "gearbox" and the swinbging arm.

No reason why not, though.
