Swinging arm oil leaks

Back in 2013 there was a discussion on the old forum about oil leaking from the UJ end of the swinging arm if it is not pointing downwards to the rear (eg when car is fully loaded). Replies suggested that this should not happen as the UJ bearing has a built in oil seal.
The sw/arm from my donor bike (1998 California) certainly allows oil past the UJ if the wheel spindle end is higher than the UJ end, but I understood that this was by design and nothing can be done. Is this right or should I strip sw/arm (not a job I was planning to do) and replace bearing?
Also is there a preferred route for the front flexible brake pipes, ensuring they are not in way of engine which I won’t be fitting for ages?
Thanks, Tony
