Build progress

Post by Tamos » Fri Apr 12, 2019 3:56 pm

Have finally completed undersealing and painting the covers to close in underside of tunnel. Have also finally decided to stop frigging about, listen to those who have already completed builds, and to fit petrol pump in back of tunnel and the filter by the cross member behind gearbox mounting. Hopefully will get the chassis the right way up in a couple of days time and start the build proper.

We're on our way, on our way, on our way. I need to extract my digit or you will be completed before me!

Enclose pics of fuel pressure regulator from 98 Cali EV donor. I propose mounting it low down (almost at floor level) in the gearbox area of the front bulkhead - fixing to sidewall with bracket. Bearing in mind that the filter is fitted behind the gearbox mtg, is this a good place, is there a better place, does it need to be closer to injectors?

Decided to fit pressure regulator close to filter, at low level on front bulkhead. Made and fitted cable trays in bottom of tunnel to give more fixing points for cable ties, and fitted handbrake system. Spent a lot of time deciding where to route brake hoses, but am quite pleased with chosen solution. Hope to trial fit body and fit petrol tank in next couple of days so that I can finish off petrol lines and move on to fitting Rev g/box, drive shafts and bearings.

Looking good, Tony. Hope your speedo and tach aren't too close to the edge of the dash - the interior trim comes down an inch to an inch and a half.
I believe you can only attach 3 photos per post.

Brakes, incl handbrake, finished. Petrol tank and all fuel lines fitted. Reverse gearbox, driveshafts and bearings fitted - this part of build has caused numerous cuts and grazes to hands so quite pleased it’s done. Was supposed to be away this weekend but had to cancel so have spent some time on dash. Did the engine turning yesterday, not perfect but looks ok, and today have made the holes to fit everything. Alan kindly supplied the dash with the speedo and rev counter holes, but the holes for the fuel gauge and rocker switches had to be done the hard way - lots of little holes and lots of filing. Photos show result (hole under fuel gauge is for immobiliser) but the warning lights are not necessarily in their final positions. Dash will get couple of coats of clear lacquer before fitting. Next job is fitting engine but this may have to wait for a week as my willing helper has been inconsiderate and gone on holiday!!

You're moving right along, Tony - looks like you'll be on a test drive before summer's over ! Great job on the dash!

Unexpected progress! Thanks to help from Chris Pleasance, who spent the day with me, and advice from Richard the engine is in. Even with an engine crane I would have struggled on my own so Chris’s offer of help was rapidly accepted.
Had problems getting the UJ to clear the bulkhead - had to put extra washer on O/S gearbox mtg with no washers on N/S. This gives just over 1mm clearance. The clutch release arm snagged on the access hole in the bulkhead so had to do a bit of filing. Hopefully all is ok but I was rather surprised that more clearance isn’t built in.
