Type 3 Speedo
Just having another look at the speedo on my type 3. The speedo has not worked since prior to my ownership. The pick up is on the front disk and I originally thought the proximity sensor would detect the fasteners for the disk. Another automotive enthusiast has suggested there should be a magnet. What do other owners have?

Yes, there should be a magnet. Amd the distance between sensor and magnet must be correct. Otherwise you get wrong readings.

It does not have to be magnets.
Polarity is important

I had issues with my speedo when I built my Type 3. I have two magnets installed on opposing bolts (180 deg spacing) and then I set my gap accordingly. I also programmed the speedo per the ETB instructions. On my first drive everything seemed to work well until I started driving about 60 mph. It then said I went into warp drive and my speed read about 140mph at times. I had set the gap per the instructions but later found out that it was picking up the other rotor bolts too. After I opened up the gap everything worked as it should.
I would check the instructions set the gap and see if you have any reading. It you start having random speed fluctuations play with the gap. If you don't have the magnets I would install them. I replaced two of the button head cap screws with hex head which I counterbored on a lathe to accept the magnets.

Thanks for the information and suggestions. I've just rolled it slowly in the garage to look at the gap and found there are 2 magnets that appear soldered in place and stick out further than any of the fasteners. The gap is very close (see picture).
I get no speed indication so it it isn't picking up the fasteners or magnets in it's present position.

I looked to back the sensor off and the head fell apart at least that answers that!

Changed two magnets for ten BZP [not stainless] bolts [not Allen fixings] on advice from Mr. EDP and used webs in disc [ten] and reprogrammed as described. Speedos now solid and exact reading being shown. Two pence piece is the gap required. This from the horses mouth.
