Build progress
Re: Build progress
Thanks Chris. I know you are trying to rush me so that I am not properly prepared for the race challenge against your big and heavy Triking!!
Agree that clear silicon good to stick cockpit moulding onto body, but is there a preferred contact adhesive for wrapping round and sticking vinyl trim to body?
Cheers, Tony

Re: Build progress
I didn't stick my cockpit roll on to the body, I bolted it with captive bolts laminated to the g/f roll before upholstering.
Was certainly a boon when she went in for respray a couple of winters ago.
It's documented on the old forum somewhere, I'll look it out if there is interest.

Re: Build progress
Tony, certainly be interested to have more details re fixing cockpit trim. Did you glue the vinyl trim to the fibreglass “roll” instead of stretching down and glueing to body?

Re: Build progress
Yes, the leather trim was glued to the "roll". I used a D shaped foam rubber tube which I think Al supplied but is available from Woolies, plus a foam finisher for smoothness. (Under the leather)

On the first car I built, I bonded nuts to the g/f and used bolts correct length from the underside.
I did have better results on the second car (Edith) using M4 bolts with a metal T welded to them, laminated in position, nuts & washers underneath. Holes needed to be drilled through both the roll and the body before upholstery, in accessible positions to get nuts on, even through the chassis rail on the low sides. Some of the bolts needed to be at an angle to enable the whole assembly to be fed into final position. When drilling through gel coat finish, don't forget to put a negative rake on the drill bit to prevent damage.
This did mean that I could fit the trim and drive around for a lengthy shakedown (1500mls) before paint job.
Hope this helps.
(Couldn't find any pics of the bolt method)

Re: Build progress
I always quite liked the look of this method...
Re: Build progress
Build nearing completion. Have glued the vinyl to the f/glass cockpit roll but have not yet fixed roll to body, probably will glue in place. Took 2 days to get satisfactory result stretching vinyl over roll and minimising creases on corners, end result acceptable but not perfect.
Could not resist fitting rest of upholstery to see what it looks like, and I think it looks absolutely frigging gorgeous. The colours go together really well - thanks to Nicki for help and quality workmanship.
Just got carpets to sort out, then have to wait to book MSVA.

Re: Build progress
Looks great, Tony - the green and tan go really well together !
Re: Build progress
Thanks for your kind comments. Can’t wait to get it on the road once current virus problems are over. Have spent most of afternoon driving up and down my short shingle drive, getting used to reverse g/box which does seem to be bedding in as can now get forwards more easily. Have now got to go out and sweep shingle back over wheelspin marks.
Cheers, Tony

Congrats. Very good result and a nice colour combination. When I upholstered something for my car in vinyl and got creases on the corners I removed them by using my wife's hairdryer, not heat gun. It's amazing how it stretches
