Flasher failure

Post by Widdup » Sat Mar 29, 2025 8:00 pm

Strangely my flashers have ceased to function after the winter layup. However I suppose that they might have packed up late last year and I just never noticed. Both the front and back flashers and the idiot light don’t work but if I put on the hazards both the rear flashers and the idiot light illuminate but don’t flash but the front ones do nothing. I’ve tried a new flasher unit with a new additional earth wire, checked all the wires for breaks and switch connections but everything seems to be as it should be. I can’t imagine that the switch has failed because the hazards aren’t working correctly and that switch is independent. As an electrical idiot I’ve now run out of ideas. Anyone got any suggestions?

Have you tested the front bulbs? Some flasher units will not flash if the load is not sufficient - such as when a bulb is out. Also, some flasher units designed for incandecent bulbs do not like be combined with LED bulbs and will either flash very fast or not at all.

For what its worth I have just replaced my old thermal flasher with an electronic one from Classic Car LEDs which will flash a mix of LEDS and tungsten. Bought on ebay - good company, tracked delivery and good quality (made in Taiwan!) www.classiccarleds.co.uk - sorry can't do links!
Excellent website.

Not much help with flasher circuit as mine uses aircraft switches and relays and I need a circuit diagram on top of the glovebox to remind me!

It can only be simple stuff if you have not touched anything!

Cheers

Thanks for the suggestions. The bulbs are both ok and the flasher unit is one that copes with both types of lights and is the same as the one fitted when built four years ago. I’ve tried separate earth wires to no avail. Since nothing works on the indicator switch circuit I’m now thinking that perhaps there is no feed to the switch. I’ve tried to work out which wire is the feed but everything disappears into the loom and I can’t trace it. All the fuses are ok. The person who wired the car originally is unavailable for about three weeks so I think I’ll just have to wait until he can attend. Thanks again for your interest and comments
