Hi Guzzi owners,
Can any one advise on what could be wrong with the 964ccm california3 engine.
The problem is that the cold start is good but it sounds like it is running on one cylinder, then it runs okay when warm but still popping in the exhaust.
Yesterday I had a new issue the engine was still warm(around 20-30 dgr C) but then it would not start.
I fiddled on the ignition wiring and wiring loom(just pushing the connectors to check if they where okay and well connected)
Then it started without any problem, it ran irregular because of the fuel flooding, but still fine.
Again with a lot of popping in the exhaust (due to the fuel flooding?).
After this no problems and I had a great run with the Triking for a good 150km.
Still had the popping in the exhaust also on a steady speed of 50-60 km/h.
My biggest issues I have now is:
1- why did the engine not start?
2- has that popping in the exhaust anything to do with the ignition?
3- why is the engine running so bad on one cylinder?
Has this to do with the ignition? I have checked the breaker gaps they are okay, timing too, spark plugs gaps okay.
I have used the original wiring cable of the Moto Guzzi and I have the original Dell’orto carburetors and settings.
Thanks for any advice
Henk

Hi Henk
Sounds like carburation problem, coupled with loose wiring somewhere.
Check the spark plugs, what colour are they?
Clean carbs, any rresidue in float bowl, pilot jets clear etc.
Are choke cables and plungers set to bottom when closed with free play on the outer cables?.
Any there any air leaks on the inlet stubs.

Re: Irregular running/starting
Hi all,
Here an update about the problems I have with the irregular running.
After checking the carburetors the Triking did start and run beautifully for about 10 km.
I stopped for a while and again the Triking would not start and after getting a bit desperate it jumped only half to life, like running on one cylinder.
It had no power and rattled and stuttered constantly, the exhaust kept popping.
I had the advice from a local Moto Guzzi expert(Jan Robers in Boekelo) he said to test the coils ( I still have the originals from 33 years ago), that seamed to be the problem.
So 2 new ones mounted and the Triking is running beautifully as before.
I hope this info will be of any help if someone should have the same problems.
Greeting from the Netherlands
