Specifications & Differences -ALL Triking Models

Post by Alanla » Thu Oct 12, 2023 6:01 pm

To help clarify the different Triking models I have tried to collate some info below - apologies if its a bit lengthy.

All four models are currently in production.

Type 1, Chassis tub has aluminium or steel bonded, riveted or welded on side panels with GFRP bonnet and rear mouldings. This is the cheapest Triking kit to purchase but most labour intensive to build. The chassis front section can be either the traditional sheet metal type "turret" construction or spaceframe as later models. The turret version uses a large crossmember running under the engine meaning its not possible to fit the later engines with the deeper sump. Early T1 models were Short wheelbase, we have now standardised on the longer wheelbase as is the later T2 and 3 models. The T1 has a "vintage" feel to the handling and road holding particularly the earlier models fitted with more basic front suspension, All later front suspension parts can be fitted to T1 models including the Triking "HP" High Performance front suspension.

Type 2, As above but with a one piece GFRP bodyshell with removeable "lid" type rear moulding which when removed leaves the rear panel incl lights in place, This is slightly restrictive for access to the rear wheel and associated components but makes for a strong rear end so practical for luggage carrying etc.. Again can be supplied with either front chassis section but most later models have the spaceframe. Handling and road holding similar to a T1 and can be upgraded in the same way.

Type 3, As above but with a slight curve to the bodyshell increasing internal space, Removable rear moulding necessitating disconnection of the rear light wiring on removal much improved access to the rear mechanical parts over a T2. We currently offer two versions of the rear moulding - with or without light pods. All T3s have the spaceframe chassis front section. The T3 is a very popular choice for kit builds and encompasses all the positive attributes and evolution of the T1 and T2

Type 1,2&3 are essentially the same rolling chassis with different bodywork, with the exception of the early T1 short wheelbase models (shorter by 4") and minor variations in the length of the Guzzi rear swing arm they are dimensionally identical. All T1,2&3 components are interchangeable between all three models. All chassis are made on the same fixture. All three models accept engine and running gear from any of the "big block" Moto Guzzi motorcycles from 850cc to 1100cc. All models have a twin shock rear swing arm, 5 speed gearbox with cable operated clutch, engines can be either carb or EFI. Engines and transmissions can be interchanged between models but using a single donor bike makes construction more straightforward. Early T1 and T2 models were a specific "non reverse" chassis. With the exception of a quite complex reverse gear option which was optional. Later models and all current models have a universal chassis which can be fitted with or without reverse gear. The reverse gear is achieved by an in-line additional gearbox, all current models retain the std Guzzi gearbox with sequential gearshift. The T2 and T3 models are currently priced the same as each other and are likely to remain so. Other than minor possible cosmetic preferences there is not really any technical or other significant advantage to a T2 over a T3
The T3 is internally the slightly larger of the 3 models giving a comfortable fit for an "average size" driver and passenger. Its not really definitive to quote exact internal sizes for occupants as all people are of course different proportions regardless of their height and weight etc. We frequently get asked "will I fit in a Triking" by people who have never seen one first hand. In most cases this is impossible to answer accurately as there are so many variables but as a guide "large" people usually find a T1,2or3 quite snug.

Type 4, Similar proportions to the other three models but around 20% larger in almost all aspects, Available in two track widths, Significantly more internal space, easily accommodates very tall and large occupants, Very generous foot room. Reverse gear is a std fitment. Uses Running gear from the Moto Guzzi "CARC" range of motorcycles either 1100 or 1200cc in std form, Modern type electronic engine management system, 6 speed close ratio gearbox with hydraulic clutch, single sided single shock rear suspension. Other Guzzi engine options are possible. The T4 is and will probably remain the most expensive to construct simply because its larger so uses more raw materials.

Thanks Alan, I’ve printed the information off, I’ve been asked so many times about the differences between all the types, and yes I’ve been able to give a reasonable answer but now I have the definitive details from the man himself. 👍
