Anormal tyre wear

Post by steveO » Wed Jun 07, 2023 2:23 am

Hi,

I have one of Alan's converted guzzi rear wheels with a car tyre. Firestone 145
The tyre is wearing almost down to no tread on only the left side as viewed from the rear.

The Triking is a Type 1 left hand drive so it is the drivers side of the tyre. I rarely drive alone and although the wife is some 40 pounds less than myself the gas tank will make up some of the difference.
the rear suspension is a pair of Harley air shocks individually hand pumped, usually to 10 pounds.

No idea what is causing this wear so any ideas welcome.

I have pumped the right side shock to 15 pounds to see if it makes a difference.

Steve

Do you have any wear or movement in the swinging arm bearings?

No play in swingarm bearings. Adjusted and greased them last year. The car has only done around 12,000 km since new. Definitely sounds like miss alignment, but like my Guzzi Convert has no adjustment. Wheel appears absolutely vertical with spirit level compared to ground.

If I remember correctly Guzzi offsets the rear wheel about an inch to one side to clear the drive, but should still be parallel to front wheels. Checked the front shocks (2 year old Hagons from Alan) are equal as could tip the car if not.

Will change the bias ply tyre to a radial, but should not change anything.

Both my Spyders and Slingshot 3 wheelers would wear out a tyre in under 2 years so life is not the issue.

Do you have a picture of the tyre?

Hi,

I think the photo attached.

Left side of tire worn more than right, as looking from rear.

Readjusted swing arm bearings to day, but really did not need.

My theory is there are more right hand bends on your favourite routes and you are accelerating hard out of roundabouts.
