Windscreen Wiper Fitting

If you are going to fit windscreen wipers, do it before you put the body on.
In the early build stage, DO NOT GLUE THE GLOVE BOX IN POSITION
If you have fixed it at the front with a couple of bolts through the chassis cross rail, this will allow you to move the box forward a bit and drop down to give access to the wiper mechanism on the passenger side for adjustment/maintenance.
Retro fit is possible, but you would need to cut a ‘window’ in the top of the glove box.
Currently available is a GM model ref WPM9009. 2 speed motor with self-parking circuit.

The basic mounting plate is a bit big for mounting on the available body moulding.
Needed turning 120deg (1 bolt hole).
I reduced the size of the plate, cutting 2 of the cush rubber corners off and welding back in a better position.
This reduced the available mounting points down to 3.
Stand-off brackets (cut from a section of 50mm box steel) provided a good position.

I decided to use 4 rose joints to give a smoother, rattle free operation.
Note position of actuator rods on the motor arm and the wiper spindle levers to avoid fouling on the glovebox and electrics.
It was necessary to put the body in position on the car with the wiper assembly mounted to check for fouling. (Several times)
It was also useful to make up some long leads for the wiring to get everything working off the car.

The wiper switch needs to be a change over type.
On gives supply to motor, off gives park supply through the in-built switch.
This could also be achieved with a standard on/off switch and a change-over relay.
I decided not to bother with the 2 speeds, plugging into the fast socket.
Wire connections.
Yellow (fast circuit)
Green (slow circuit)
Red (permanent live to park switch)
White (from internal park switch to on/off switch)
Don’t forgetting the washer jets.

May help to clarify wiring, here is the basic circuit.
When the motor gets to the park position, it turns off the feed to the white wire and

earths the motor causing an instant brake, avoiding overrunning to the next wipe command.
