Bevel Box

Post by EricStarmer » Fri Aug 19, 2022 4:43 pm

I was under the car working on the parking brake when I noticed this large gap ( 1 cm +) between the bevel box and the auto-type rear wheel, which i installed sa couple of years ago. I can't remember how it "should" look :) . Is this normal or do I have a major problem ?

Hi Eric
I'm working on one at the moment.
You have the same set up as me. Cush drive cast plate is held in position with a large circlip.
I cannot get my camera in a position to see the circlip, which is clearly visible in your picture.
Try slacken off the spindle clamp on the left side then check that the spindle nut on the right is tight.
Hmmm

They don't look a lot different . Checked the spindle nuts - they are tight, so I don't think the wheel is going to fall off :-). Do remember thinking when I put the auto rim in "Why isn't there something to stop dust getting in to the cush pads", but don't remember how big the gap was. I can actually get my fingers in the gap and feel the rubber pads.....

No worries I think Eric. Mine has looked much the same since assembly 35,000 km ago.

I'm struggling to see how you can get your fingers in to feel the rubber 'pads'.
From your picture, it seems you have the same modular hub from Al, drive plate retained by the circlip. Cush drive completely sealed away.

Does seem weird to me - I checked with Alan, and he says it looks normal - I'll ask him about being able to touch the pads , though........

Managed to get a photo "in the gap" - I think I jumped to conclusions, and it looks like what I was feeling wasn't the pads, but maybe the cover over the pads ? Net result is that I think everything is OK, and I was just being overly cautious as far as "mind the gap" is concerned. Thanks Tony for your input and time spent !
