New Reserve Tank - Cannonball II

Post by bdaughdrill » Tue Jan 19, 2021 6:52 pm

Those of you who know or are interested in the insanity of racing from NYC to LA (2825 miles, 4500+ km) in an open cockpit two seater will appreciate the new farkle the Wee Beast has gotten, a new reserve tank bringing me to nearly 17 gallons (64 liters) and extending my range between stops to just over 450 miles). It will allow me to reduce stops from 9 down to 5 with a goal of this attempt being <40 hours.

It doesn’t look very aerodynamic; but hell, another cannonball run, just to be able to do one would be great. You’ll have to video bits so we can enjoy it with you.
A tip, bit of super glue under the headlamp mounts might stop the moving around😉

Good luck Brian.
450mls is a long time sitting in one spot, perhaps sculpting the seats to fit would help.
If the spec is rigidly 'open top' then the touring windscreen would give you a lot more creature comfort. Throws a lot of the bad weather over the top.

So height wise, shoulder to shoulder the tank is about half covered by bodies and top is below helmets. I had no issue with seats previously but this if 50% increase in duration of each leg so the shakedowns may identify need for improved seats. The victim, I mean co-driver, is presently unknown. We wear full motorcycle helmets so touring screen not as critical. Full helmets mean non driver can tuck into a ball and sleep without so much wind noise

Brian - why is the gas tank several inches above the body, as opposed to as low as you can get it " Maybe to make room for heads/helmets ?

So the plumbing out of bottom of tank has room to include shut off valve. Fills separately and gravity feeds into taming tank through extended neck of filler tube

Seems like the extra drag will reduce your mpg by a measurable amount - I'd do some mpg tests with the tank on to see if/how much it dropped. You could mount a regular plastic 5 gallon gas can to the passenger's side, and the intrepid passenger/backup driver could pour it into the tank while you're driving...... :)

Do you have a second tank opposite the current one?
