Steering column UJ

Post by Widdup » Fri Dec 27, 2019 12:30 pm

I’m just starting to build a type 3 and I’ve angled the steering column through the centre of the bulkhead aperture which has resulted in what I think rather is a steep angle for the rack UJ. Is this normal and indeed does it matter? I could make the aperture larger but am reluctant to do so if it’s not necessary. Anybody got any thoughts.

On my current Type 3 build and my previous Type 2 build I put a small packing piece underneath the lower steering column mount which had the effect of raising the shaft height into the top UJ, thus evening out the angle of both UJ's. However, if you're able to put the steering wheel on at this stage of the build and turn the rack smoothly to/from full lock each way then there would be no need to worry, as I recall it's only at really extreme angles that you get uneven rotation on UJ's..

As a general principle, steering shaft joints should run at <30deg.

Many thanks for your replies. I haven’t got the steering wheel yet but when it arrives I’ll see if it turns freely and if not I’ll pack out the lower mount.
Thanks again.
