Balance bar problems

Post by CairAndros » Thu Jul 17, 2025 6:22 pm

Hi all,
Can any one give any advise on securing the balance bar from changing when set.
I was enjoying a good ride when my Triking lost speed because of front brake locking.
On inspection I noticed that the balance bar moved almost to the left (I have a type 3 LHD).
The brake felt rock hard and the front brakes were full on. The discs discoulerd due to the temperature.
My question is how can I secure the balance bar setting.
Thanks Henk

As you may know, the balance bar adjusts how much force goes into the front and rear brake master cylinders when you press the brake pedal. I can't see how it would make the front brakes stay on unless it was fouling on one of the other pedals. But to answer your question, one solution is to thread two nuts onto the balance bar thread and lock them together so that the balance bar is fixed in position (but still allows movement of the yokes attaching to the pedal pushrods)

If the front brakes are staying on then there could be a problem with the master cylinder. Does it return fully after being pressed down or is it sticking in position? It would be worth checking the front brake disk callipers too, are the pistons moving freely, are the pads sticking in the calliper? It should be easy to remove the pads and just check these things out (though if you operate the brakes with the pads out be careful not to push the pistons right out).

Shown lock nut on Bias bar and details of nut sizes and spacer required.
Hope this is helpful.

Half nuts or turn down full nuts.

I had a similar issue happen to me but with the rear wheel. Lock nut as described solved the issue.

Thanks all for the good suggestions .
I like the idea with the spacer , I will persue this construction .
The front brakes were blocked and the pedal was solid, it was pulled free because the yoke got stuck in the channel of the pedal.
After freeing the brakes worked fine, the thing I noticed that the yoke (adjustment) is moving(turning) in use when braking.
After freeing the pedal there were no issues with the brakes , but it is not a comforting idea that this could happen again.
I let you know what my solution will be and hopefully post some pictures with it.
Henk
