Removing PU adhesive

Post by Skeomorph » Thu May 29, 2025 9:24 pm

Hi All,
I have bonded my chassis plate to the chassis with PU adhesive and have found that I haven't left enough clearance for the seat belt reel. Obviously I can put the seatbelt reel somewhere else but I'd rather not if possible. Therefore I need to remove the chassis plate...
I think a cheese wire will probably get the plate off but I've no idea what would remove the cured PU without damaging the powder coat underneath. Does anyone have any experience of this and can suggest how to remove the adhesive?
Thanks for any and all suggestions,
Andy.

I would use a sharp chisel to remove the thickest, without scratching the powder coat, then try white spirit.

Hi Tony,
Thanks for the suggestion. Once I got the plate off I was surprised at how 'rubbery' the adhesive was - not what I expected at all. I used a sharp scraper instead of a chisel (my son has most of my tools!) to slice off the bulk of the adhesive followed by lashings of white spirit and elbow grease. It was all so much easier than I expected that I don't know why I've been putting the job off for so long...
The powder coat has been discoloured by the adhesive but that's fine as most of it will be covered by the slightly lowered plate. The most important thing is its coverage hasn't been compromised.
Cheers,
Andy.
