Electrics - oh no!

Post by Chrispy » Thu Mar 19, 2020 1:13 pm

I do not understand electrics. I believe any rules governing auto electrics are empirical and change on a daily basis.

My indicators stopped working. Hazard lights were working o.k. Haz and ind are on separate fused circuits and relays. Replaced fuse for inds, no luck.

Swapped relays and indicators worked. Bought new relay. Plugged relay in, indicators came on but do not flash. Swapped relays again. Indicators work and so do hazards!! What gives?

Do you have led or filament bulbs? leds need an electronic flasher unit.
Do you have a separate supply from the battery for the hazards?
What type of hazard switch do you have?
It can be wired so that you only need one flasher unit.

It's a kind of magic!

If it’s not a blown bulb or bad ground somewhere, it may be a short.

One of the turn indicators in my T4 kit was grounding out inside the housing.
In the manufacturing of the bulb base, one of the wires got pinched and cut thru, exposing bare wire.

an easy fix but a nightmare to track down.

The hazard switch is doing 2 things.
1. Change power source from switched ignition circuit to direct supply from battery.
2. Connect together left and right indicator circuits.

Sketch may clarify. (May need to open in new tab)
