Type 4 chassis

Post by gogboy » Wed Jul 16, 2025 7:38 am

I will getting my type 4 kit very soon.
A quick question .......
How many people does in take to lift the chassis onto trestles?
Then, how many to lift the rolling chassis, minus the engine, off the trestles onto the floor?
Im guessing it should be ok for 4 men to do the lifting. Thanks.

Based on my own experience, two people can usually manage a bare chassis ok.

As for a rolling chassis, if you've got the reversing box in as well as all the suspension and wheels I would try and get 6 people if it's a complete lift off and lower. By that I mean it's lifted up, held in the air whilst someone takes the trestles out and then lowered to the ground. If you can lower it in stages, one end at a time then four would be ok. The CARC unit and even the front wheels and tires are quite weighty items so it's best to be over powered than under powered in the lifting department, especially as it has to be lowered so close to the ground.

1 tonne capacity engine cranes. 2 off. Rentable.
Lifting strops. Again Rentable.
Easy and safe.

Or 4 burly people to can trust NOT to let go and one more person to shift the stuff from underneath whilst it is being held aloft by aforementioned burly people.

I am lucky to have proper steels holding my garage roof, so I did mine on my own, slowly and carefully, with the engine in, using 2 chain lifts. Rentable.

Do you have any hydraulic jacks? Axle stands or home made wooden boxes?
Pat and I lifted the chassis onto the wheeled building trolley and using a large garage jack [you are going to need one for servicing easier] the completed car was jacked up, axle stands inserted and the trolley wheeled out. Using the jack to let down each wheel until on the ground. You can borrow my build trolley if it is of help [SG188EH]
