Black and silver number plates

To whom it may concern.

Number plate changes from September 2021 | Auto Trader UK

From 1 January 2021 onwards, the DVLA banned all vehicles manufactured on or after 1 January 1980 from displaying the historic black and silver number plates, reducing options to the modern white/yellow reflective plates only. According to the new law, only vehicles manufactured before 1 January 1980 and those registered with the ‘historic vehicles’ tax class can use the black and silver plates.

The answer is to carry modern ones under the carpet, and put them on at the roadside if stopped. The law states that if the offence is to be dealt with by way of VDRS (Vehicle defect rectification scheme) which the vast majority of similar offences are, no further action will be taken if the fault is rectified there and then.
If it's dealt with by fixed penalty notice..... that's a different matter.

At least we need only need worry about the rear number plate!

The front number plate is surely just decorative trim as it is not a requirement to have one (if indeed you have one).

Except for an MOT apparently.

This is the wording from the DVSA MoT manual:

"Three-wheeled vehicles that don’t have a body type which is characteristic of the body of a four-wheeled vehicle don’t require a front number plate."

I think this applies to Trikings, so no front number plate required?

This is of course true but I am not prepared to argue with the MOT man. I get the impression there is an anomaly in the tester's manual.
