I'm just in the process of sending off the documents to DVLA for a Triking's first registration, and to obtain a registration number (and V5)
The DVLA web guidance says that you need only send an insurance certificate/cover note if it's being registered to a Northern Ireland address
I also 'phoned the DVLA help line and asked them. They said no.
Does anyone have any recent experience of registering a Triking and their experience with the insurance question?
Thanks

Hi Rob
You need to have insurance in place (current) to be able to register, I believe.
DVLA can see automatically that you have insurance when registered, but don't know how this can work without a reg number.
Hmmm.

I think it is o n the chassis number.
Re: Registering a Trking for First Time - Insurance requirements
You insure it against the chassis number initially and send the certificate off with the application forms. Once the DVLA issue the reg number then the insurance company can change the certificate accordingly, I advised mine this would need to happen when I took out insurance and got them to state what it would cost, if anything.

Lynbrook insurance do not charge for changes.

Update on Insurance, if anyone is interested
Adrian Flux charge a very high premium to insure with VIN then change to reg number
Lynbrook Insurance only insure vehicles over 20 years old, which they call "classic"
MSM know Trikings very well, will provide cover note with VIN, and change to reg number free.
As to whether or not you actually need Insurance to register for first time:
DVLA Web guidance says only for NI addresses
Two phone calls to DVLA told me a) no you don't need Insurance and b) you need to be insured but you don't need to provide a cover note
Insurance company told me I don't need one.
