Sorted when I found a dry joint from regulator. Thank you everyone who offered help.

It does go out on starting Ian. When first switching on sometimes it lights and sometimes it does not.

The red ignition lamp is intermittent on switching on prior to starting the engine.
When it does deign to appear it goes out immediately on the engine running.
New alternator and new regulator.
Regulator earthed direct to battery.
