I looked to back the sensor off and the head fell apart :shock: at least that answers that!

Thanks for the information and suggestions. I've just rolled it slowly in the garage to look at the gap and found there are 2 magnets that appear soldered in place and stick out further than any of the fasteners. Type 3 Speedo

Just having another look at the speedo on my type 3. The speedo has not worked since prior to my ownership. The pick up is on the front disk and I originally thought the proximity sensor would detect the fasteners for the disk. Another automotive enthusiast has suggested there should be a magnet. Wh...

At least we need only need worry about the rear number plate!

The front number plate is surely just decorative trim as it is not a requirement to have one (if indeed you have one).
